Cllr Maxine Chakowa announced as new Mayor of Sevenoaks

Cllr Chakowa has been a Town Councillor since 2015.  Prior to this she had been actively involved in the community as Vice Chairman to the Sevenoaks Town Partnership.

Cllr Chakowa is also known to many in the town in her business role as Director of Specsavers Sevenoaks.

The Mayor has chosen as her Civic Charity to support those affected by Breast Cancer.

A minimum of 80% of the funds she raises will be donated to Breast Cancer Care. Breast Cancer Care supports people to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone.

In addition to this the Mayor will be raising funds to underwrite a weekly Sevenoaks Breast Cancer Support Group for people who have had or have breast cancer in Sevenoaks and the surrounding area.  Arrangements for this are being put into place and further details will be provided shortly.

Mayor Cllr Chakowa stated: “I am humbled that I have been elected to Mayor of Sevenoaks and thank my fellow Councillors for this privilege.  If I can be as good an ambassador for Sevenoaks as former Mayor, Councillor Andrew Eyre and Amanda, his Lady Mayoress, I will do well indeed and I thank them both for their successful year in office, I know they enjoyed it very much.

I could not have achieved any of this without the support of my family, friends. Anyone who knows me, knows I strongly believe that by working together you can achieve so much more in all aspects of life.  With this in mind, my chosen charity for the year will be Breast Cancer Care, I look forward to working with them and raise as much money and awareness for this great worthwhile cause.”

Sevenoaks has actively supported fundraising for Breast Cancer Care for a couple of years and is the only town in the UK to turn pink for one week of the year every October. The organisers of Pink Week are excited to be able to support the Mayor for effectively a Pink Year and her fundraising efforts.

Steph Harrison the Lead Organiser for Sevenoaks Pink Week said 'I am thrilled and honoured that the Mayor has chosen to support Breast Cancer Care, a charity that helps so many people during the most difficult of times. We have an exciting year planned and with the help of the Mayor and the Town Council I know we can help make a difference to the lives of many more.'
